Seraphina

Humans and Dragons have lived together for years with a tenuous truce between them. Yet factions of both humankind and dragonkind are trying to trigger a war. Seraphina lives in the palace, daughter of a diplomat, and child of both a human and a dragon. She hides her scales and tries not to call attention to herself, all while working to find a role in the Royal court that would preclude marriage and discovery.

I'm a big fan of intrigue, so I liked the Royal intrigue that gets set into play in this book. Good guys, bad guys, creepy guys, and a castle, and some half-dragons. And a sequel is just out, "Shadow Scale." Enjoy!

Seraphina was about a teenage girl named Serpahina who is hiding the secret that she is a half-dragon while being an assistant to the music master at the royal court of Gorredd. Despite the treaty between dragons and humans being celebrated, there are still suspicions and distrust between the two groups. Seraphina also finds out that there are others like her throughout the course of the book. She also has interactions with members of the royal court, particularly the royal cousin Captain Kiggs.

There are several aspects of this book that I liked, and many that I did not. I liked the relationships that Serpahina has with her friends Captain Kiggs and Princess Glisseda. I also liked the mystery of the novel, which was: who killed Prince Rufus? Another aspect I liked was how Goredd was ruled by queens. However, I was confused by the dragon’s names and characteristics. I also felt that Serpahina’s “mind-pearl” sections were confusing and disruptive to the rest of the novel. The concepts of the human-dragon world and half-dragons is good, but I felt it was not executed well in the novel.

Therefore, I would not recommend this book unless it was for someone who likes fantasy, dragons, and mysteries. Overall, I did not like this book but there were some good parts, which did not make up for the rest of the book’s negative aspects

Seraphina was an amazing book filled with suspense, mysteries, secrets, friendship, adventure, and even love. I really enjoyed Seraphina because of Seraphina's whole mind connection with other half-dragons. I also liked the mystery of how Prince Rufus was killed, and how the identity of the mysterious killer unfolds to be someone you never thought it could be. I recommend this book to readers who like all types of genre. Even if you don't think you'll like it, trust me I didn't think I'd like it either!
