At first, Scott is that kid who just wants to get through the day without getting smacked in the back of the head on the bus, without being targeted by older kids for his money, without looking like too much of a nerd to his crush, Julie. Then he sees Julie is involved in various activities and Scott tries to catch her attention by joining the school paper, working stage crew in the school musical, and running for student council. Hilariously, Scott is both thwarted and rewarded at every turn. This book makes for great, light summer reading. If you need something smart and fun, this should be just the ticket. Sleeping Freshman Never Lie was a very good book and a quick read. It is the story of Scott Hudson as he navigates his first year of high school. It was realistic, relatable, meaningful, and funny. Scott’s expectations for high school, particularly in his friendships and romantic relationships, result in Scott struggling to understand his place in high school. His expectations are not met, yet he remains hopeful that his friends will be constant presence in his life and that his feelings for his friend from kindergarten will be reciprocated. In addition, Scott’s observations about high school are very entertaining, which seamlessly weaves in humor and criticism of high school norms.
At the same time, Scott learns he will be have a younger sibling, and Scott’s way of coping with this news is to write his new sibling letters and lists about what to expect in high school. These letters were my favorite part of the book, since they mark how Scott changes over the course of his freshman year.
I would recommend it to anyone starting high school, anyone in high school, and anyone who likes to laugh when reading. However, I believe that almost anyone can relate to the experiences that Scott has during his freshman year of high school.
This mostly satirical work grows sentimental at the end. Scott, a book-lover freshman, chronicles his evolving relationships with family and friends, inserting stories about his position with the newspaper and about his most interesting classes. Any self-proclaimed "English nerd" would appreciate the many literature and writing allusions; any middle- or high-school aged teen would love the interactivity of the occasional riddle and the personableness of Scott's voice. Personally, I found the brutality of high-school exaggerated and many of the technology references outdated (as this was published in 2005), but Sleeping Freshman Never Lie was easy to read and excellent for finding a few laughs.
I found Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie an amazing book about an average teen named Scott Hudson, who just wants to make it thorough his first year of high school, catch Julia's attention (his crush), and find out where he belongs in high school. Meanwhile, Scott finds out he's going to be an older brother. Seeing how much easier freshmen year of high school would be if it came with a manual, Scott decides to write one for his new sibling. Throughout the book, Scott learns about so many things, such as friendship, family, and even love. I LOVED this book and think that anyone who likes a good laugh while reading, starting high school, or not will really like this book.
