El Deafo

When Cece suffers hearing loss she is strapped with a clunky, awkward hearing aid, and her quest to make new friends at school stalls out. Cece must figure out how to make her giant, powerful device work for her, and out of this misery and frustration a new superhero is born-- El Deafo, Listener for all. A great read for fans of Raina Telgemeier's Smile.

Cece wanted nothing more than to have a best friend. I think a lot of people could relate to her story, even if they don't have hearing loss. What do you think?

El Deafo was an interesting book and was very readable. Typically, I do not read graphic novels so reading this book was eye-opening for me as a reader. I found that I enjoyed reading this story as a graphic novel, especially since this book has parts in which Cece imagines herself as a superhero. I think this book is very relateable since I believe all of us feel we are different in some way and Cece’s hearing aid is a visible difference. The ways that Cece copes with her difference shows how everyone with their own individual differences can cope. However, the author wants us to celebrate differences rather than just cope with them. The author’s note was very informative and in-depth. However, the one aspect of the book I did not like was how abruptly it ended.
Overall, this was a good book, and should be used to help children and teens learn about deaf culture and individuals dealing with healing loss.
